Becoming a sales agent is how many people start a business with less risk than manufacturing: you sell established brands with a distributor behind you. But what does it take to become an agent without getting stuck with unsold stock or squeezed on discounts? Here is a checklist in order.

1. Choose a category you can actually sell

Start from customers you already have or understand: friends, the neighbourhood around your shop, an online following. Pick categories they buy regularly, such as household goods, cosmetics, food or supplies. Avoid categories you do not understand just because you heard the margins are high.

2. What your starting capital covers

ItemNotes
First stock orderSet by the distributor’s minimum order
Premises, shelving, signageOptional if you sell online or from home
Shipping and packagingAsk clearly who pays delivery
Buffer for slow sellersKeep a reserve so you never have to dump stock at a loss

There is no universal figure; ask each distributor for their minimum order and build your own spreadsheet before paying any deposit.

3. Paperwork and registration

Depending on your size, you may need to register a household business or a company, register for tax and hold category-specific licences (food, cosmetics and so on). The agency contract should spell out territory, selling price, discounts, bonuses, credit terms, returns and termination. For a large contract, have someone with legal expertise read it before you sign.

4. Negotiating discounts and terms

  • Ask for the volume discount table and quarterly sales bonuses.
  • Ask about returns for near-expiry and faulty goods.
  • Ask about display support, signage, samples and brand promotions.
  • Request credit terms that match how fast your stock sells.

You will make plenty of calls comparing offers; a headset with a mic lets you talk and take notes at the same time.

5. Sales channels: shop, online or both

Agents today usually sell in-store and through messaging apps, social media and marketplaces. Ask whether the distributor allows online sales and whether there is a minimum advertised price. Live streams showing new stock also attract wholesale and retail buyers; a sturdy phone stand is enough to start.

6. Risks to avoid

  • Paying big deposits to a company without clear distribution paperwork.
  • Ordering too many product lines at once.
  • Signing contracts with heavy penalties for missing sales targets.
  • Accepting goods without invoices or clear origin.

A quick spreadsheet before you sign up

Say you plan to become an agent for a laundry detergent brand serving the neighbourhood around your home. Write down the cost per carton after discount, the recommended retail price, how many cartons you honestly expect to sell each month based on the number of households nearby, delivery costs and any storage rent. Multiply the gross margin per carton by your monthly volume, subtract fixed costs and you will see how long it takes to recover your first order. If the numbers do not work, renegotiate or choose another category before paying a deposit. It is also wise to model a slow month at half your expected sales: if you could not survive that, the plan is too risky. Keep the spreadsheet and update it with real sales after the first three months, because those figures are your best argument when you ask the distributor for better terms.

Where to start

List three categories you understand, find two or three distributors for each with the distributor finder by province, ask them all the same set of questions and compare the answers side by side. If you would like an introduction to distributors currently looking for agents, leave your Zalo number at the end of the finder and we will pass it on.

Above all, start smaller than you think you should. It is far easier to scale up a profitable agency than to recover from a warehouse full of stock nobody wants.

Questions people ask

Do I need a shop to become an agent?
Not always. Many agents sell online or deliver directly; ask each distributor about their requirements.
Should I represent several brands at once?
You can if contracts allow and you have the capital. Beginners do better starting with one or two brands to keep stock manageable.
